Submental liposuction is surgery done to reduce or eliminate a double chin. This surgery can be done as a single procedure if the patient has no significant laxity of the skin of the neck. It tends to be, therefore, done in patients younger than 40 to 45 years of age. It is frequently combined with a mini-lift if there is no significant excess skin in the neck.
Reasons For Considering Submental Liposuction
• Double chin not improved by dieting.
• No significant laxity of neck skin.
Submental liposuction can be done in the office or as outpatient surgery depending upon the extent of the surgery. This surgery usually takes about one hour to perform.
Generally, postoperative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the recovery time. Some swelling will be noticed, however, most swelling will begin to disappear after a week. A chin strap is usually worn for several hours per day. Return to work is rapid, usually within three days. Patients sometimes report minor discomfort associated with the surgery. This can be effectively treated with oral medications which we will prescribe. While complications are rare, patients can minimize the risks of potential problems by carefully following the post-surgical instructions given by the surgeon.
